
How to Dose Antiscalants Correctly
An antiscalant only works if it reaches the membrane at the right concentration, continuously. Get the dose wrong in either direction and you either invite scale or create new problems. Dosing is where a good antiscalant is made or wasted, so it's worth doing properly.
Why dosing accuracy matters
Underdose and you leave scale risk on the table; the reject concentrates past the point the antiscalant can hold, and scale forms. Overdose and you waste chemical, and beyond a point you can cause harm: excess antiscalant can act as a nutrient for biofilm, and some products react with cationic coagulants upstream to form a sticky fouling of their own. The window between too little and too much is what correct dosing hits.
Calculating the dose
The dose isn't a rule of thumb, it's a calculation. You run a full feed water analysis and your target recovery through the antiscalant supplier's projection software, which returns the dose needed to keep every scaling species in solution at that recovery. The answer is usually in the low single-digit mg/L range, but the exact figure depends on your water and how hard you're pushing recovery. Redo the calculation whenever the feed water or the operating point changes.
Dosing equipment
Deliver the antiscalant with a properly sized metering pump, dosing neat or diluted product into the feed line upstream of the cartridge filters, so it's well mixed before the membranes. Size the pump so your target dose sits in its normal operating range, not at the extremes. Keep the stock solution clean and covered, use the right materials for the chemical, and if you dilute, use good quality water and mix only what you'll use in a reasonable time.
Common errors
The frequent mistakes are mechanical and procedural. A pump that has drifted out of calibration delivers the wrong dose without anyone noticing. An empty or airlocked stock tank stops dosing entirely, and scale forms fast once it does. Dosing into the wrong point, or too close to the membranes to mix, leaves uneven protection. And carrying an old dose after the feed water has changed, higher or lower, either wastes chemical or leaves you exposed.
Monitoring
Correct dosing is confirmed, not assumed. Watch the plant's normalised performance for the early signs of scale, check the stock tank level and pump operation on a routine, and verify actual consumption against the calculated rate so a drifting pump shows up. Where it matters, the dose can be checked analytically. The point is to catch a dosing fault from the trend before it becomes a scaling event.
Best practice
Good dosing comes down to a few habits. Base the dose on a current projection, not last year's. Keep the metering pump calibrated and the stock tank full. Dose at a well-mixed point ahead of the filters. Re-run the numbers when the water or recovery changes, and monitor consumption so faults surface early. None of it is complicated, but all of it has to be consistent.
