
Biofouling in RO Systems
Biofouling is the fouling that keeps RO operators up at night. Of the four fouling types it's the hardest to prevent and the hardest to clear, and it has a habit of coming straight back after a clean. Here is what it is and how to fight it.
What biofouling is
Biofouling is the growth of a microbial biofilm on the membrane. Bacteria in the feed attach to the surface, multiply, and secrete a matrix of slime, extracellular polymeric substance, that shelters the colony and glues it in place. The result is a living layer that blocks flow, raises pressure drop and can even degrade the membrane over time.
Why it's the hardest to control
Two things make biofouling uniquely stubborn. It's self-renewing: as long as a few organisms and some nutrients survive, the biofilm rebuilds, so a clean that leaves any behind buys only a short reprieve. And killing the bacteria isn't the same as removing them, because dead cells and their slime remain on the membrane and even act as nutrients for the next generation. That's why biofouling recurs when other fouling, once cleaned, stays gone.
How it develops
It starts with a few cells attaching to the surface, often in a low-flow or stagnant spot. They multiply, secrete slime, and the biofilm thickens and spreads. Warm water, nutrients in the feed, and idle periods all speed it up. Because it grows rather than simply accumulates, biofouling can escalate quickly once it takes hold, which is why early control matters so much.
The chlorine trap
Chlorine is the obvious weapon against bacteria, and it's a trap on RO. Chlorine kills microorganisms, but it also oxidises and destroys polyamide RO membranes, so it can't be left in the feed reaching the membrane. The standard approach is to dose chlorine upstream to disinfect, then remove it, with activated carbon or a reducing agent, before the RO. But because the dead bacteria still provide nutrients, disinfection alone doesn't stop biofilm forming downstream. Chlorine helps, but it isn't a complete answer.
Preventing it
Biofouling control is about denying the biofilm what it needs. Cut nutrients in the feed, since less food means slower growth. Put UF pretreatment in front of the RO to remove most of the bacteria before they arrive. Avoid stagnant water and dead legs where biofilm establishes. Use membrane-safe non-oxidising biocides where appropriate. And clean promptly and thoroughly, before the biofilm matures, because a young film comes off far more easily than an established one.
Cleaning it
When biofouling is present, high-pH alkaline cleaning, often with specialised biocidal chemistry suited to the membrane, is the tool, followed by a thorough flush. The aim is not just to kill the organisms but to strip the slime layer off, because leftover biofilm reseeds the problem. Even then, expect biofouling to need more frequent attention than other fouling, and treat rising cleaning frequency as a cue to revisit pretreatment and nutrient control.
