
Types of Membrane Fouling
Membrane fouling isn't one problem, it's four, and each behaves differently. Knowing which type you're dealing with decides how you prevent it and how you clean it. Here are the four, and how to tell them apart.
Particulate and colloidal fouling
This is the buildup of fine suspended matter, silt, clay, colloids and metal precipitates, as a cake layer on the membrane surface. It's the most straightforward type, driven by particles in the feed that pretreatment didn't remove. It shows up as a rising pressure drop across the elements. SDI is the standard measure of the feed's potential to cause it, and good particle pretreatment, especially UF, is the answer.
Scaling
Scaling is the crystallisation of sparingly soluble salts on the membrane as the reject stream concentrates. Calcium carbonate is the common, pH-dependent, acid-soluble one. Calcium, barium and strontium sulfate are concentration-driven and resist acid cleaning. Silica polymerises into a glassy layer that's very hard to remove. Scaling is controlled by antiscalant dosing, recovery limits, and in the case of carbonate, feed pH.
Organic fouling
Organic fouling is a film of natural organic matter, humic acids, proteins, oils and greases, that adsorbs onto the membrane and sticks. It's common on surface water and wastewater feeds. It reduces flux and can be tenacious. Prevention leans on coagulation, activated carbon and UF pretreatment, and removal uses high-pH alkaline cleaning.
Biofouling
Biofouling is a living biofilm: bacteria settle on the membrane, multiply, and secrete a protective slime that blocks flow and is difficult to remove. It's the hardest type to control, partly because killing the bacteria doesn't remove the biofilm, and because chlorine, which kills bacteria, damages RO polyamide membranes and must be removed before the membrane. Control combines nutrient reduction, UF pretreatment, avoiding stagnation and prompt cleaning.
Telling them apart
The symptoms overlap, so diagnosis takes more than the pressure gauge. The pattern of which stage fouls, the feed water analysis, the cleaning that does or doesn't work, and where needed a membrane autopsy, together point to the type. Particulate fouling tends to hit the first stage; scaling tends to hit the last stage where the reject is most concentrated; biofouling often spreads and returns quickly after cleaning. Reading these clues saves you from cleaning blind.
Prevention
Whatever the type, prevention shares a backbone: pretreat the feed well, dose the right antiscalant, run sensible recovery, keep nutrients and stagnation down, and clean early on normalised trends. The difference is emphasis. A particle-heavy feed needs stronger filtration; a scaling feed needs the right antiscalant and recovery; an organic or biological feed needs UF and prompt, correct cleaning. Match the defence to the type and the plant runs clean.
